Trolling Minnesota 🧌

Minnesota is full of awe and wonder. Most notably, there are over 11,000 lakes scattered about the state. They also invented Scotch Tape, the Bundt Pan, rollerblades, the Milky Way candy bar, and the world’s first practical water skis.

But there were two things that I dearly love and they are both in Minnesota. Aspen trees and Thomas Dambu Trolls.🧌Wait, make that three things. My son recently moved to Minnesota so he’s at the top of the list.

If you are not familiar with Thomas Dambu, he is a Danish artist that turns discarded materials into mystical creatures for others to enjoy. He has installations all over the world – and I have been lucky enough to encounter his work in Minnesota and Kentucky.

Recently, we visited a small lake community in Minnesota, where Dambu’s Trolls have turned the town upside down. The lakeside community of Detroit Lakes embraces the Troll Trail like a family member.

The city park hosts the first Troll of the tour, Alexa. She stands about 20 ft. tall. Her cookbook contains special ingredients to create an elixir to break the spell.

The project also includes over 800 whimsical birdhouses along the trails, like colorful bread crumbs to keep hikers on track. πŸ’œπŸ’› Painted purple and yellow, the birdhouses are easy to spot.

The fairy tale engages visitors to play along and find clues at each sculpture. The trolls are located at various parks around the region. It is a great way to see the area and explore parks we otherwise might have missed.

The ingredients for Alexa’s elixir include chirps from happy birds, laughter from others, a walk in your bare feet, and sharing a story with a troll.

The Troll Trail adds a layer of fun to a day spent outside. There are five Trolls in all. The object of the game is to follow the riddles, collect symbols, and solve the mystery of the Golden Rabbit. πŸ‡ We spent two days trolling and enjoyed every step!

Minnesota, in the summer, is fantastic! We highly recommend a trip to the northernmost state in the contiguous United States. It is nicknamed the Star of the North or the North Star state. While we only saw a small portion of the state, it left a big impression on us.

As they say in the north, β€œBring ya ass” (three words two syllables) to Minnesota.

Yeah, no, go! πŸ€“
