Sitting on the beach is like having a front-row seat to nature’s summer tour. It feels like the tempo slows down, worries fade, and the ebb and flow of the ocean’s melody becomes the preferred playlist of the day.
Our travels take us to the eastern shore from Delaware to North Carolina. It’s like a million songs come rushing back as we strolled the familiar boardwalks, down by the sea and the summer breeze made us feel fine…you get it.
Ocean City, Maryland
While it’s been a minute since we’ve been to an east coast beach, it still felt familiar. While many old hotels have been replaced with fancy high-rises, we managed to find one of those old vintage rooms along the iconic Ocean City Boardwalk.
The old wooden boardwalk vibrates as thousands tread across the weathered planks. The sand just inches away, entertains the child in us all. We couldn’t wait to slip off our shoes and sink our toes in the sand.
The morning sunrise over the Atlantic was spectacular. We nestled into a spot surf-side and watched an intense light show at the break of dawn. This never gets old.
Virginia Beach, Virginia
We love Virginia because it’s always been a place full of adventure. The shoreline is shared with military jets and the mythical powers of King Neptune. This unlikely combination of cultures merges into a beautiful expression of summer.
The oceanfront concrete boardwalk is accessible to everyone. There is a separate paved path just for bicycles. Blooming flowers line the oceanfront and beachfront benches welcome one to sit and relax.
What could be better? Watching the dolphins parade up and down the coast. Now that’s entertainment. Everyone stops and takes notice. You hear the low mumbles “Is that a shark?” In this case, it was dolphins doing a lovely morning serenade.
Outer Banks, North Carolina
Heading a few hours south is the gateway to a new world where the first English child, Virginia Dare was born in 1587 on Roanoke Island. And she mysteriously disappeared… here’s the story But better yet, see the story unfold on stage annually at the Lost Colony.
The Outer Banks of North Carolina is a natural shoreline without all the fuss. You won’t find long wooden boardwalks or countless souvenir shops, but you will find endless miles of undisturbed beaches and a rich colonial history.
This a place where the birds and turtles find sanctuary, and people are mindful as visitors. Further south the road is a narrow band between the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound. The best part of the OBX, is where a ferry awaits to take you to Ocracoke Island.
Coastal Vibe
Beyond the natural wonders, being at the beach also means being a guest in a vibrant coastal community. There is a distinct camaraderie among beach dwellers, a shared nod and appreciation for the simple joys of life by the shore.
The beach offers a haven to find solace, peace, and great seafood. Our advice is to keep your beach vibe casual and your flip-flops handy – oh, and be open to smiles and head nods from strangers.
Time at the beach is an invitation to live in tune with the rhythm of the sea. These seashore moments let us embrace a life of endless possibility, inspiration, and inner peace.
Whether it’s the beach or the mountains, just go. Prepare a great playlist, pack a bag, and hit the road. You’ll be glad you did.
We drank the wild air and it was good! The beach was calling and we went!.
Oh, look a mountain! “🐿️ “
